One of the common medium for web users to stay connected with the world is Twitter, an increasingly popular social networking site, from where they can share their views, opinions, logics and can have discussions. India’s first ever conference to promote Twitter took place at Paharpur Business center, Nehru Place, Delhi, on 9 January 2010. The topic of the discussion was “Is Twitter Indian in character?” This question seems easily answerable but when discussed a lot of questions remain unanswered.

The event has been organized by Twitsnaps.com, the first Indian website that allows you to share photos and videos in your Twitter stream. Twitsnaps.com, a Business project of MapXL. INC is used by unlimited users across the stream.

The panelists discussed a variety of aspects like Twitter’s use in customer service, instant one-to-one interaction with well-known personalities, it’s use by mainstream media institutions to break news and, of course, the Shashi Tharoor and Chetan Bhagat controversies.

Personally, I am a bit skeptical of Twitter since technology is extremely transient,” said Vadukut. “But there is no denying its power as both, a professional and personal brand-building tool,” he said, adding that Twitter had become his primary source for news these days.

For me, Twitter can never replace traditional media,” said Polgreen. “A 140-character interaction… leads to openness and transparency, but you still need tough reporters asking tough questions,” she said. Referring to the need for having a candid attitude, she stated how Americans use Twitter “for one to one interaction and for customer interaction at a faster level”. She also made it clear that “Twitter is just one other thing for communication and is not a replacement for any other social networking sites.”

Pramit J Nathan asserted that one has to be focused on what he is tweeting. He was all for using Twitter not just “as a pastime”, but also “as a promotional tool”.

These views showed us the way as how twitter has become the favorite of all and more and more individuals are welcoming it to the Indian community .By the end of the conference every one felt that this type of conference should be held round the year in different parts of India and abroad so that more and more people come forward to be a part of this information sharing process.
